Wellington Photographers was begun by Wellington Photographer Chris McCarthy (see www.thephoto.co.nz) as a way of meeting three specific objectives:
In 2009 good quality cameras are less expensive and of a higher quality than ever before in history, it seems that everyone can become something a photographer, we see this as a wonderful thing for photography. The photography market in New Zealand is unregulated so anyone can claim to be a professional photographer. Each year New Zealand’s tertiary institutions output larger numbers of photography degree graduates than ever before, however, the majority of these graduates do not succeed in their business endeavors as photographers. This lack of success seems to be for many reasons, but primarily because clients become disappointed when their photographer does not perform as expected on the day or the final image results are not of the quality expected. This becomes a double tragedy when the beginning photographer becomes unable to make a living. Couples receive sub standard wedding photographs and the would-be photographer is soon out of business. With the right professional guidance, some of these failed graduates might have become competent professional photographers. There are no winners in this situation. When Wellington Photographers photograph a wedding an experienced professional will be present and in charge of the entire shoot, a photography graduate or junior photographer my also accompany the experienced professional on the day, there is no charge for this but the photographs are available to the couple. We see this as a great outcome for couples and also for emerging photographers.
